Bad news for the community and the environment.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore used her casting vote tonight to reject a motion asking that the Erskineville Road Community Garden not be developed.
As the Friends of Erskineville have recently said, this valuable green space provides important environmental benefits, including the ability to compost and grow food locally.
It has operated entirely on volunteer efforts since 2009, without any financial support from the City of Sydney
I also support more affordable housing and there is absolutely no reason why we can't have both more community gardens and more affordable housing.
Residents were told the Council are considering another three sites for affordable housing -- two already have buildings on them and the other is a car park.
We should not be sacrificing valuable green space for development. A far better option would be to develop another site, retain the garden and include it as an official City Of Sydney community garden with resources and support for the benefit of all of the Erskineville community.
Again, quoting the Friends of Erskineville, "there are many factors that contribute to housing affordability, but community gardens are not one of them."
